ASCI 2016


The PREMIER Network held its fourth annual Advances in Structural & Chemical Imaging (ASCI) Workshop May 18-20, 2016 in conjunction with Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.

The workshop serves as a forum for researchers and professionals to come together in an interdisciplinary meeting on chemical imaging that bridges the major divide between the structural biology and material science communities. The multitude of methods being employed are linked by common themes in their desire to achieve chemical specificity, high spatial resolution (atomic in some cases) and the need to acquire, process and analyze large data sets to identify signature events.


Microscopy is assuming a critical level of importance in many areas of the physical and life sciences. Not only are microscopes now providing unprecedented characterization of the nano- and bio-structures that exist, they are now being used to image processes as they take place in situ. New instruments and methods are being developed at a rapid pace and it is becoming increasingly difficult for a single institution to keep up with the latest developmentsā€”this is related to the need for a critical mass of local expertise and the expense of purchasing and maintaining the instrumentation. In the current climate of shrinking research budgets, it is more important than ever to develop a rational business model for microscopy that can provide access to state-of-the-art instrumentation for world-leading research while still being cost-effective.  While institutions are spread over a large area, modern travel and communication links mean that by coordinating the approach to microscopy across the institutions, a critical mass of expertise and user community can be established to support a wide range of experimental techniques. Individual institutions can focus on areas of special needs and world-leading expertise while at the same time deriving the benefit of similar capabilities in other areas at nearby institutions.

The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is addressing this challenge by forming a framework that promotes world-leading microscopy capabilities at individual campuses/sites that simultaneously benefits an extended community of users.  The Pooled Resources for Electron Microscopy Informatics Education and Research (PREMIER) Network, provides members with the tools to compete in the international research arena with the financial weight (number of users) to sustain the research activities.  All participants of the PREMIER Network agree to work together for mutual benefit in establishing a framework to facilitate cross-institution, state-of-the-art research using electron microscopy and related techniques. Participation in the PREMIER project is open to all academic, national laboratory and industrial research ventures (not limited by location) committed to developing and implementing active research programs using microscopy.
