About University of Maryland

The University of Maryland in College Park, near Washington, DC, is a public research university founded in 1856, and it is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland (UMD). UMD is dedicated to developing and disseminating scientific knowledge and its applications for the benefit of all people, worldwide. The current enrolment at UMD is about 40,000 students from 130 different countries, pursuing their degrees in more than 100 undergraduate majors and 120 graduate programs.
 

About Pacific Northwest National Laboratory

Powered by the creativity and innovation of 4,300 scientists, engineers and professional support staff, The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is advancing the frontiers of science and addressing some of the most challenging problems in energy, the environment and national security. PNNL researchers provide national and international leadership in; 1) deepen understanding of climate science; 2) invent the future power grid; 3) prevent nuclear proliferation; and 4) speed environmental remediation. The Joint Global Change Research Institute (JGCRI) is a partnership between PNNL and UMD and it was established in 1991 to address complex scientific challenges and opportunities at the interface of human and natural systems.
